Story Elements | Mini Lesson
Students will review the key elements of a story—character, setting, conflict, plot, and resolution—and use them to analyze a short example and plan their own brief narrative idea. This 15-minute mini lesson is designed for quick instruction, guided practice, and a fast check for understanding.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Character | A person, animal, or other figure in a story. |
| Setting | When and where a story takes place. |
| Conflict | The problem or struggle that drives the story. |
| Plot | The sequence of events in a story. |
| Resolution | How the conflict is solved or how the story ends. |
Ask students: 'What makes a story feel complete?' Record 2-3 quick responses and connect them to story elements.
Share brief ideas and listen for common story features.
Define character, setting, conflict, plot, and resolution. Use a short sample story or paragraph to point out each element aloud.
Take notes and highlight each story element in the sample.
Model a quick story map using the sample text. Ask students to identify one element at a time and explain their choice.
Respond orally or on paper, identifying the story elements with teacher support.
Prompt students to write a 3-4 sentence story idea that includes all five elements.
Create a brief story concept or outline using the vocabulary.
Ask students to turn and tell a partner one element they included and how it helps the story. Collect or review their quick writing sample.
Explain their story idea and submit a quick written response if requested.
Review the five story elements together and ask students to name the one they think is most important for starting a story. Reinforce that strong stories use clear elements that work together.
Formative assessment through student responses during discussion and the 3-4 sentence story idea or story map. Use a quick checklist to confirm understanding of the five story elements.
Write a one-paragraph story that includes character, setting, conflict, plot, and resolution. Underline or label each element in the paragraph.
