Plants | Substitute Teacher
This 15-minute substitute lesson introduces Grade 11 students to the main structures of plants and how each part supports survival, growth, and reproduction. Students will observe, discuss, and apply basic plant biology vocabulary through a fast-paced, practical class routine.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Root | The plant part that anchors the plant and absorbs water and minerals from the soil. |
| Stem | The part that supports the plant and transports water, nutrients, and sugars. |
| Leaf | The part where photosynthesis mainly happens, making food for the plant. |
| Flower | The reproductive part of the plant that helps produce seeds. |
| Seed | A plant structure that can grow into a new plant under the right conditions. |
| Photosynthesis | The process plants use to make food using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide. |
Show a plant image or a real plant. Ask: 'What parts do you notice, and what do you think each part does?'
Look at the plant, share quick observations, and name familiar plant parts.
Briefly explain roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and seeds. Point to each part on the diagram and state its function in one sentence.
Listen, repeat key vocabulary, and take brief notes or annotate the diagram.
Ask students to work with a partner to match plant parts to functions on the labeling sheet. Circulate and correct misconceptions.
Match each plant part to its job and discuss answers with a partner.
Call on a few students to answer: 'Which plant part absorbs water?' 'Which part makes food?' 'Which part makes seeds?'
Respond orally and correct work if needed.
Summarize the main idea: all plant parts work together for survival. Collect or quickly review student sheets if time allows.
Share one thing they learned and one plant part they can now explain.
Plants survive because different parts do different jobs. Roots absorb, stems support and transport, leaves make food, flowers help reproduction, and seeds begin new plants.
Draw and label a plant with at least five parts, then write one sentence explaining the function of each part.
