Human Body | Small Group
Students work in small groups to identify major human body systems and match each system to its main function. The lesson uses simple visuals, quick discussion, and a short sorting activity to build basic understanding of how body systems work together.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| body system | A group of organs that work together to do a specific job in the body. |
| organ | A body part that has a special job, such as the heart or lungs. |
| respiratory system | The system that helps us breathe and take in oxygen. |
| circulatory system | The system that moves blood, oxygen, and nutrients around the body. |
| digestive system | The system that breaks down food so the body can use it. |
| nervous system | The system that sends messages between the brain and the rest of the body. |
Show a simple outline of the human body and ask: 'What different parts or systems do you already know?' Record a few answers.
Think aloud, share prior knowledge, and listen to classmates.
Briefly introduce 4 key body systems: respiratory, circulatory, digestive, and nervous. Point to each on a diagram and state its main function in one sentence.
Follow along on the diagram and repeat key terms with the teacher.
Give each group system/function cards. Model one example, then ask groups to match each system with its job.
Work together to sort the cards and explain their matches to one another.
Call on groups to share one match each. Correct misunderstandings and reinforce accurate pairings.
Present one answer, compare ideas, and revise as needed.
Ask students to complete the sentence: 'One body system I learned about today is ___ because it ___.''
Write or say one quick exit response to show understanding.
Review the main idea that the human body is made of systems that each have a job and work together to keep us alive. Ask students to name one system and one function before ending.
Choose one body system learned in class and write 3-4 sentences describing its main job and one way it helps the body. If possible, draw a simple picture or label a diagram of that system.
