Reading Comprehension | Centers
Students rotate through short, easy centers that connect spelling practice with reading comprehension. They read, sort, build, and use target words in context to strengthen decoding, spelling, and understanding of a short passage.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Context clue | A hint in the text that helps explain a word's meaning. |
| Comprehension | Understanding what you read. |
| Spelling pattern | A group of letters that often work together in words. |
| Vocabulary | Words students need to know and use correctly. |
Introduce the goal: use reading to practice spelling and understanding. Briefly review the target words and model one example using a context clue.
Listen, repeat the target words, and read the example word in context.
Give students a short passage and ask them to read it silently, then highlight the target spelling words in the text.
Read the passage and highlight each target word they find.
Provide word cards and ask students to sort words by spelling pattern, such as vowel sound, ending, or prefix/suffix.
Work with a partner to sort the cards and explain why each word belongs in a group.
Direct students to build or rewrite 3-5 target words using letter tiles or notebooks, then use each word in a sentence from the passage.
Build the words, write them correctly, and use them in sentences that show meaning.
Ask students to answer 2-3 short questions about the passage and check for correct spelling in responses.
Answer the questions using complete sentences and spell the target words carefully.
Bring the class together, review the target words, and have students share one new fact or idea from the passage. Reinforce that spelling and comprehension work together.
Collect each student's recording sheet or quick-check responses to assess spelling accuracy, word use, and passage comprehension.
Read the passage again at home and choose three target words to write in a sentence for each. Underline the spelling words in your sentences.
