Maps | Independent Practice
Students practice basic map-reading skills by identifying map parts, interpreting symbols, and using a map key, compass rose, scale, and legend independently.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Map | A drawing of an area that shows locations and features. |
| Legend | A key that explains what symbols on a map mean. |
| Compass Rose | A symbol that shows direction on a map. |
| Scale | A tool that shows the relationship between distance on the map and real distance. |
| Symbol | A picture or mark used to represent something on a map. |
Display a simple map and quickly point out the title, legend, compass rose, and scale. Briefly remind students what each part does.
Look at the map, follow along, and label the parts on their worksheet.
Give students a practice map and a set of short questions. Instruct them to work quietly on their own and use the legend and compass rose to answer each item.
Independently answer questions about symbols, directions, and locations on the map.
Ask students to use the scale to estimate simple distances and identify where one place is located in relation to another.
Complete the distance and location questions using the map scale and direction clues.
Go over answers quickly, inviting a few students to share how they found their answers.
Check their work, correct mistakes, and explain how they used the map features.
End by asking students to name one map feature they used today and one thing it helped them do.
