Reading Comprehension | Mini Lesson
Students will practice reading comprehension skills by reading short physical education-related texts such as game rules, workout instructions, and safety guidelines. They will identify key ideas, sequence steps, and answer basic comprehension questions through guided discussion and quick practice.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Main idea | The most important point or message in a text. |
| Key details | Important facts or pieces of information that support the main idea. |
| Sequence | The order in which steps or events happen. |
| Context clues | Words or phrases around an unknown word that help explain its meaning. |
| Directions | Instructions that tell someone what to do. |
Show a short PE rule or workout card on the board. Ask students what kind of information is important to notice first when reading directions for an activity.
Share ideas and predict what they should look for in PE reading materials.
Read a short passage aloud once, then model how to find the main idea, underline key details, and circle unfamiliar words. Think aloud about how context clues help determine meaning.
Follow along on their copies and mark the text with the teacher.
Ask students to reread the passage in pairs and answer 2-3 simple questions about the rules, steps, or safety points. Prompt students to point to the text evidence.
Work with a partner to identify answers and explain how they found them in the text.
Give students a second short PE text, such as warm-up directions or a class game rule sheet. Circulate and support students who need help identifying key information.
Read independently and complete a brief comprehension task, such as matching steps to order or answering short questions.
Review answers as a class and highlight one strategy students used to understand the text, such as rereading or using context clues.
Share one answer and one reading strategy they used.
Ask students to complete the sentence: 'One reading strategy that helps me in PE is ___.' Reinforce that reading carefully helps students stay safe, follow rules, and participate successfully.
