Context Clues | Centers
Students will rotate through literacy-based physical education centers to practice using context clues to determine the meaning of challenging PE-related vocabulary in exercise directions, sport rules, and health scenarios. The lesson blends movement, reading, and collaborative problem solving to strengthen comprehension in a practical, active setting.

Display 2–3 PE-related sentences with one bold unfamiliar word in each. Model thinking aloud to show how surrounding words can reveal meaning. Briefly review the goal: using context clues to understand vocabulary in PE.
Listen, respond to quick questions, and identify possible meanings using nearby words.
Place students in small groups with a short sport or fitness rule sheet. Direct them to underline unfamiliar words and use context clues to match each word with a meaning card. Circulate and prompt with questions such as, 'What in the sentence helped you decide?'
Read the passage, underline clues, match vocabulary to meanings, and record evidence on the sheet.
Set up task cards around the gym or classroom. Each card includes a PE instruction with a challenging word. Students move to the card, read it, and choose the meaning that best fits based on context. Check for accurate reasoning rather than speed only.
Move to stations, read the instruction, discuss clues with teammates, and write the best meaning with evidence.
Provide scenario cards with student-athlete or fitness situations. Students sort the cards into categories such as 'clue words,' 'best meaning,' and 'proof from the text.' Model one example if needed, then release groups to work independently.
Sort scenario cards, identify clue words, and justify their choices using text evidence.
Give pairs a short paragraph about training, safety, or nutrition with multiple unfamiliar terms. Ask them to rewrite one sentence in their own words using the context clues to explain the target word. Listen for accurate use of vocabulary.
Work with a partner to determine meanings, rewrite sentences, and share one explanation with the class.
Review the most difficult words and invite volunteers to explain how they used context clues. Collect the recording sheets or exit responses for assessment.
Share answers, defend their reasoning, and complete the exit check.
Bring the class together to highlight one successful strategy for using context clues in PE texts. Reinforce that readers can solve unfamiliar words by paying attention to nearby words, examples, and sentence meaning.
Formative assessment will include teacher observation, center recording sheets, and the exit check. Students will be assessed on correct meaning identification, use of textual evidence, and ability to explain their reasoning.
Find one unfamiliar word in a sports article, workout plan, game rule, or health post. Write the word, the sentence it appeared in, the context clue you used, and what you think it means.
