Word Problems | Independent Practice
Students will independently solve advanced health-related word problems that require reading comprehension, interpretation of health data, and application of numeracy skills. Problems may include nutrition, medication labels, exercise, risk reduction, and personal health budgeting. The lesson emphasizes accuracy, reasoning, and explaining solutions clearly.

State the goal: students will work independently to solve health word problems accurately and show complete reasoning. Briefly review expectations, available resources, and how work will be checked.
Listen, set up materials, and review the task directions.
Circulate quietly to monitor progress, clarify directions as needed, and note common errors without re-teaching the entire class. Prompt students to show work and use vocabulary in responses.
Work independently on the problem set, showing calculations, units, and brief explanations for each answer.
Pause the class to ask students to verify one completed problem against the prompt and confirm that units and labels are correct.
Self-check one problem, correct errors, and continue working.
Collect work or have students compare answers to a posted key for selected items. Review 2–3 challenging problems and highlight correct reasoning.
Finish remaining problems, review selected answers, and revise work as needed.
Students reflect briefly on which problem type was most challenging and one strategy that helped them solve health word problems accurately.
Formative assessment based on the independent practice worksheet, with points for correct calculations, units, reasoning, and completion. Teacher may also use observation notes during work time to identify students who need follow-up support.
