Story Elements | Mini Lesson
Students will identify the main story elements in a short narrative: character, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution. The lesson uses a brief teacher model, guided practice, and a quick partner activity to help students recognize how these elements work together in fiction.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Character | A person, animal, or other figure in a story. |
| Setting | The time and place where a story happens. |
| Plot | The sequence of events in a story. |
| Conflict | The problem or struggle in a story. |
| Resolution | How the problem is solved or ends. |
Display a short story excerpt and ask students to silently identify one character and one setting detail.
Read the excerpt and write down one character and one setting detail.
Define the five story elements and briefly model each one using the excerpt. Write the elements on the board with simple examples.
Listen, follow along, and copy key terms if needed.
Ask the class guiding questions: Who is the main character? Where and when does the story take place? What is the conflict? What happens first, next, and last?
Respond verbally and help complete the class discussion of the story elements.
Give students a graphic organizer and have partners fill in the story elements for the excerpt.
Work with a partner to identify and record character, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution.
Call on a few pairs to share one story element and correct any misunderstandings.
Share answers and compare responses with the class.
Ask students to complete the sentence: "The most important story element in today’s passage was ___ because ___."
Choose a short story, novel chapter, or movie scene at home and write one sentence for each story element: character, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution.
