Story Elements | Independent Practice
Students independently practice identifying and coding basic story elements by matching characters, setting, conflict, and resolution to short story examples in a simple digital or paper-based activity.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Character | A person, animal, or figure in a story. |
| Setting | The time and place where a story happens. |
| Conflict | The main problem or challenge in a story. |
| Resolution | How the problem is solved or the story ends. |
Briefly explain that students will independently match story elements in a coding-style sorting activity. Model one example if needed.
Listen, open materials, and read the directions.
Circulate quietly, answer questions, and check for understanding without leading students to answers.
Complete the matching or sorting task independently, identifying characters, setting, conflict, and resolution.
Ask students to self-check answers or compare with an answer key, then review any common mistakes.
Check work, correct errors, and respond to a few review questions.
Remind students that story elements help readers understand a story’s structure. Ask them to name one element they identified today and one clue that helped them.
Collect the completed independent practice task and check for accurate identification of story elements.
