Students will learn that a theme is the big lesson or message in a story. Through read-aloud, discussion, drawing, and shared writing, students will identify a theme and write a simple sentence about it.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| theme | the big lesson or message in a story |
| lesson | something we learn from the story |
| message | what the author wants us to think about or remember |
| characters | the people or animals in a story |
Ask students, 'What do stories sometimes teach us?' Record a few ideas. Explain that today they will learn about a story's theme, which means the big lesson or message.
Share ideas aloud and listen to the introduction of theme.
Read the chosen picture book aloud. Pause at key moments to ask simple questions: 'What is happening?' 'What does the character learn?' Model thinking: 'I think the theme might be kindness because the character learns to help others.'
Listen to the story, answer questions, and help notice what the character learns.
On chart paper, draw a simple two-column chart: 'What happened?' and 'What did we learn?' Guide students to help fill it in with pictures or short words. Then work together to say the theme in a short class sentence.
Contribute ideas, repeat the theme aloud, and help sort story events and lessons.
Model a sentence frame on the board: 'The theme is ____.' or 'This story teaches us ____.' Have students help fill in the blank with a simple word such as kindness, sharing, or friendship. Write one class sentence together.
Suggest theme words and help compose the sentence.
Give students paper to draw a part of the story that shows the theme. Ask them to write one sentence using the frame provided. Circulate to support spelling, sentence start, and letter formation.
Draw the story moment and write a simple theme sentence.
Invite a few students to share their drawing and sentence. Restate the lesson: a theme is the big lesson or message in a story.
Share their work and listen to classmates.
Review the anchor chart and ask, 'What is theme?' Students respond together: 'Theme is the big lesson or message in a story.'
Ask your child to tell you the theme of today's story in one sentence and draw a picture of a part that showed the lesson.
