Sequencing | Guided Practice
Students will practice putting pictures and events in the correct order and use sequence words to tell a short story. The lesson uses guided practice, oral discussion, shared writing, and independent practice with teacher support.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| sequence | the order that events happen in |
| first | the beginning part |
| next | what happens after |
| then | what happens after that |
| last | the ending part |
Show 3 simple picture cards from a familiar routine, such as brushing teeth or making a sandwich. Model putting the first picture in order and ask guiding questions about what happens next.
Look at the pictures, answer questions, and help decide the order using oral language.
Introduce first, next, then, and last. Write the words on the board and model a short oral example using all four words.
Repeat the words, point to the matching word cards, and practice saying a model sentence with the teacher.
Give pairs or small groups picture cards from a simple story. Guide students to place them in order and explain their thinking. Support by asking, 'What happened first?' and 'What happened last?'
Work with a partner to arrange the pictures, talk about the order, and use sequence words to explain.
On chart paper, write one sentence for each picture with student input. Model sentence structure and spacing. Emphasize using sequence words to start sentences.
Help the teacher choose words, say the sentence aloud, and check that the story is in order.
Provide a simple prompt or picture set. Support students as they write 3–4 short sentences in order. Confer with students individually as needed.
Draw or place pictures in order, then write one sentence for each part of the sequence using first, next, then, and last.
Invite a few students to read their work aloud. Restate the correct order and praise use of sequence words.
Share writing with the class and listen to classmates.
Review the class story together and have students say the events in order using sequence words. End by asking, 'What word tells us the beginning?' and 'What word tells us the ending?'
Teacher will assess students by observing guided practice and reviewing the independent writing sample for correct sequence, use of sequence words, and ability to tell events in order.
