Solar System | Independent Practice
Students will independently practice identifying the Sun and the eight planets in our solar system by sorting, labeling, and discussing simple facts with a partner or teacher check-in. The lesson uses hands-on, age-appropriate STEM tasks and visual supports.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Solar System | The Sun and all the planets and objects that move around it. |
| Sun | A star at the center of our solar system. |
| Planet | A large round object that moves around the Sun. |
| Orbit | The path a planet follows around the Sun. |
| Moon | A smaller object that moves around a planet. |
Point to the solar system chart and quickly review the Sun and the eight planets. Model the order once using a simple chant or pointing pattern.
Say the planet names aloud with the teacher and track the order with their fingers or by pointing.
Explain the task: students will match, label, or color the planets on their own. Show one example and remind students to use the word bank or chart if needed.
Listen, ask questions, and look at the example before starting.
Circulate quietly, check for understanding, and provide brief support as needed. Prompt students to use the chart, start with the Sun, and work left to right if the worksheet is ordered by distance.
Complete the worksheet independently by labeling or matching the Sun and planets.
Invite students to compare answers with a partner or do a quick teacher check at their desks. Correct gently using the chart as a reference.
Compare one or two answers, make corrections, and explain one planet name aloud.
Bring the class back together and review: Ask, 'What is at the center of our solar system?' and 'Name one planet.' Praise effort and clean-up.
Answer the review questions, share one thing learned, and clean up materials.
Review the key idea that the Sun is at the center of our solar system and the planets move around it. End with one quick student share and a positive wrap-up.
