Matter | Small Group
Students will explore matter by observing and sorting objects as solids, liquids, and gases through hands-on small-group activities. The lesson is designed for Grade 1 and focuses on simple, concrete experiences using familiar classroom materials.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| matter | Anything that takes up space. |
| solid | A kind of matter that keeps its own shape. |
| liquid | A kind of matter that can pour and takes the shape of its container. |
| gas | A kind of matter we cannot always see or hold, like air. |
| observe | To look carefully and use our senses. |
Show one familiar object, such as a crayon. Ask, 'What do you notice?' Explain that today students will explore matter using their eyes and hands.
Share observations about the object and listen to the lesson focus.
Introduce matter, solid, liquid, and gas using simple examples and gestures. Model repeating each word and pointing to an object or picture.
Repeat words, point to examples, and answer quick yes/no questions.
Pass around solid objects one at a time. Guide students to notice that solids keep their shape. Ask students to sort the objects into a 'solid' bin.
Touch, observe, and help place objects into the correct group.
Show water in a clear cup. Slowly pour it into another container and model that liquids can move and take the shape of a container. Ask students what they notice.
Observe the pouring, describe what they see, and identify the liquid.
Use a balloon to introduce gas as air. Explain that gas can be in the balloon even though we cannot always see it. If safe, gently blow up a balloon or show one already inflated.
Watch, answer questions, and connect air to gas.
Give each group picture cards or objects to sort into solids, liquids, and gases. Support students with prompts and model where needed.
Work together to sort items and explain choices using vocabulary words.
Review the three kinds of matter and ask students to name one example of each.
Share one solid, one liquid, and one gas example.
End by having students do a quick class chant: 'Solids stay, liquids pour, gases like air, and matter is everywhere!' Review one final example from each category.
