Vocabulary | Project Based Learning
Students will explore and spell simple vocabulary words by sorting picture/word cards, discussing meanings, and creating a small poster that shows one word in a sentence and with a matching picture. This short project-based lesson helps first graders build vocabulary, practice spelling, and explain their thinking.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| vocabulary | Words we learn and use in speaking, reading, and writing. |
| spell | To say or write the letters of a word in the correct order. |
| sort | To put things into groups that go together. |
| category | A group of things that are alike. |
| sentence | A group of words that tells a complete thought. |
Show 2 picture cards and say the words aloud. Ask, 'Which word do you know? What does it mean?' Model repeating the words and spelling them together as a class.
Choral repeat the words, point to the matching picture, and share quick ideas about meaning.
Place mixed picture and word cards on tables. Explain that students will work in pairs to match each word to its picture and sort them into a simple category, such as animals, objects, or action words.
Work with a partner to match cards, read the words, and sort them into groups.
Model how to choose one word, write it neatly, draw a picture, and make a simple sentence using the word. Provide a sentence frame if needed, such as 'I see a ____.' or 'The ____ is ____.'.
Choose one vocabulary word, write it on the poster, draw a matching picture, and complete a sentence with teacher support.
Invite 2-3 students to show their poster and read their sentence. Prompt classmates to listen for the vocabulary word.
Present their work briefly and listen to peers.
Review the words by pointing to each card and asking students to spell one or two aloud as a group.
Chorally spell selected words and say one meaning.
End by having students point to their poster word and say it aloud together. Ask, 'How did pictures help us learn and spell our words today?' Reinforce that strong vocabulary helps us read, write, and speak clearly.
Use the mini-poster and teacher observation of the sort as the assessment. Look for correct word-picture matching, readable spelling of the target word, and a simple sentence that shows understanding of the vocabulary word.
