Theme | Assessment Review
Students will review spelling words connected to a simple theme through oral practice, sorting, writing, and a short assessment. The lesson is designed to be highly guided, engaging, and appropriate for first grade.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| theme | A main idea or topic that words, pictures, or stories are about. |
| word | A group of letters that names something or tells about something. |
| spell | To put letters in the correct order to make a word. |
| sort | To group things that go together. |
Show a picture related to the chosen theme, such as pets, farm, or school. Ask students to name things they see and say the words together clearly.
Look at the picture, name objects, and repeat the theme words aloud.
Write 5 to 8 simple theme words on the board. Model how to sound out and spell each word slowly. Have students read and echo each word.
Listen, repeat, and trace the spelling in the air or on desks with fingers.
Place a few words and pictures on the board. Model sorting the words that match the theme and naming any words that do not belong.
Help sort the words into the theme group and explain choices using simple sentences.
Dictate theme words one at a time. Say each word, use it in a short sentence, and repeat it. Give time for students to write each word.
Write each word on paper or mini-whiteboard and check their spelling after each word.
Give a short review assessment with 3 to 5 theme words. Read each word aloud and ask students to write the correct spelling independently.
Complete the assessment quietly and show their best spelling work.
Review the theme words together, read them aloud one last time, and celebrate careful spelling. Ask students to name one word they spelled well today.
Students will complete a short teacher-led spelling review assessment using 3 to 5 theme words. The teacher will score accuracy based on correct letter order and completion.
