Forces | Whole Class
Students explore how different forces can change sound and movement in music. Through singing, body percussion, instrument play, and movement, they learn to control and describe force by making music loud/soft and fast/slow.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| force | A push or pull; in music, the energy used to make sound or movement happen. |
| loud | A strong sound with more volume. |
| soft | A quiet sound with less volume. |
| fast | Moving or sounding quickly. |
| slow | Moving or sounding more slowly. |
| beat | The steady pulse in music. |
Play two short contrasts on an instrument or recording: loud/soft and fast/slow. Ask students to show thumbs up when they hear a change.
Listen carefully and respond with thumbs up when they notice a change in sound or speed.
Explain that force is the energy we use to make music. Model singing one line loudly and softly, then clapping fast and slow. Record the vocabulary words on the board.
Repeat the words, watch the demonstrations, and echo the teacher with voice and claps.
Lead the class in simple patterns using claps, pats, and snaps: loud clap/soft clap, fast clap/slow clap. Use cue cards to switch the force.
Copy the patterns, change their volume and speed on signal, and stay with the beat.
Play music with clear changes or call out cues. Ask students to move like a feather for soft/slow and like a robot or giant steps for loud/fast.
Move across the space using different levels of energy, speed, and size to match the cues.
Divide instruments among students. Model how to play each instrument with different force levels. Direct small musical responses: play loud, then soft; play fast, then slow; stop on signal.
Play instruments carefully, adjust force on cue, and listen for stop/start signals.
Guide the class to create a short four-part class pattern: loud/fast, loud/slow, soft/fast, soft/slow. Perform together and repeat if needed.
Help create the pattern, perform it as a whole class, and follow the teacher’s cues.
Ask students to name one way force changed the music and one example they performed today.
Share answers using vocabulary words and listen to classmates.
Review the vocabulary chart and have students complete the sentence: 'Today I used force in music by ____.' End with one final class echo pattern using loud, soft, fast, and slow.
Formative assessment through teacher observation during listening, movement, body percussion, and instrument activities, plus a brief oral check of vocabulary and matching sound changes to cues.
