American Revolution | Small Group
Students will learn that the American Revolution was a time when some people in America wanted to change unfair rules from Britain. Show simple examples and ask: 'Is this fair or unfair?' Use kid-friendly situations like sharing crayons or taking turns. Connect student answers to the idea that people in the past also wanted fairness.
Turn and talk in pairs, then share one idea with the group.
Show a map and pictures of America and Britain. Explain that long ago, America was made of colonies and Britain made many of the rules. Introduce the word 'revolution' as a big change people wanted.
Point to America and Britain on the map and repeat key words.
Read a short story about colonists wanting fair rules. Pause to ask simple questions: 'What was unfair?' 'Who made the rules?' 'What did people want?' Use picture cards to support understanding.
Answer questions with words, gestures, or pointing to pictures.
Give each group picture cards to sort into categories such as 'People,' 'Places,' and 'Ideas.' Help students place George Washington, Britain, colonies, and fair/unfair ideas in the correct group.
Work together to sort cards and explain choices with support.
Ask students to draw one picture from the lesson, such as George Washington, a ship, or something fair/unfair. Invite a few students to share their drawings.
Draw and briefly describe their picture to the group.
Review the words fair, colonies, Britain, revolution, and George Washington. Ask: 'What was the American Revolution about?' End with one simple sentence students can repeat together.
Repeat the review sentence and name one thing they learned.
Students complete the sentence: 'The American Revolution was about people wanting ______.' The class repeats the answer together: 'fairness' or 'change.'
Ask your child to draw a picture of something fair or unfair and tell one sentence about it.
