Animals | Standard Lesson
Students learn how animals can affect human health in helpful and safe ways. They identify simple ways to stay healthy around animals, practice safe choices, and explain why caring for animals matters.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| animal | A living thing such as a dog, cat, bird, fish, or farm animal. |
| safe | Not likely to cause harm. |
| germ | A tiny living thing that can make people sick. |
| clean | Free from dirt and germs. |
| care | Helping animals by feeding, watering, and keeping them safe. |
Show animal picture cards. Ask students to name the animals and share one thing each animal needs to stay healthy.
Name animals, repeat simple facts, and share ideas such as food, water, shelter, and gentle care.
Explain that animals can help people by giving comfort, helping on farms, and reminding us to be responsible. Teach that we stay healthy by washing hands after touching animals, being gentle, and not touching unknown animals.
Listen, repeat key ideas, and answer simple questions about safe animal behavior.
Display behavior cards one at a time. Have students thumbs up for safe choices and thumbs down for unsafe choices. Discuss each answer briefly.
Make choices, explain in simple words, and listen to classmates’ answers.
Give students a paper with two sections: safe around animals and unsafe around animals. Students sort or draw one example in each section.
Sort pictures or draw examples and label with adult support if needed.
Invite a few students to share one safe choice and one way to care for an animal.
Share answers using complete or partial sentences.
Review the big idea: animals can help people, and people must care for animals and stay safe around them. End with students repeating one healthy habit, such as 'Wash hands after touching animals.'
At home, draw one animal you know and write or dictate one way to care for it or stay safe around it.
