Repeat words, name pictures, and share quick ideas about each word.
Place word cards and picture cards on the board or table. Model one match, then invite students to help match the remaining words.
Match words to pictures and explain why a match is correct.
Choose a vocabulary word and model a simple sentence, such as 'The dog runs.' Guide students to create oral sentences using the remaining words.
Say sentences using target words with teacher support.
Give pairs a small set of cards to sort into categories such as animals, actions, or classroom items. Check and correct as needed.
Work with a partner to sort cards, say the words, and explain the category.

Complete the assessment independently, showing understanding of word meaning and use.

Share one word and one sentence or meaning they remember.
Bring the class back together to review a few key words and meanings. Ask students to share one word they can use in a sentence. End by reminding them that good readers listen for clues, look at pictures, and use word meaning to understand vocabulary.
Students complete a short independent check with matching, circling, and simple sentence-based vocabulary items. The teacher uses the work and observation notes to determine which words and skills students understand and which need review.
