Greet students in the target language, review number words 1-10, and model simple counting with fingers or counters.
Repeat number words, count aloud, and show numbers with fingers or cards.
Teach key vocabulary using pictures and gestures. Read one simple problem aloud and highlight clue words like more, left, and altogether.
Repeat vocabulary, point to matching pictures, and identify clue words with teacher support.
Solve one word problem step by step on the board. Think aloud: read, find the numbers, choose the action, and count with manipulatives.
Watch, count along, and answer guided questions such as 'How many?' and 'Add or take away?'.
Present 3-4 short word problems with pictures. Guide students to solve each one as a class using counters, choral responses, and sentence frames.
Use manipulatives, answer in chorus, and complete sentences such as 'There are ___.' and 'The answer is ___.'
Pair students and give each pair a picture card or oral problem. Circulate, prompt with questions, and support use of vocabulary and sentence frames.
Solve problems with a partner, explain thinking, and record or say the final answer.
Call on volunteers to solve one final problem aloud. Review vocabulary and model a complete response in the target language.
Share answers, repeat key words, and correct responses with teacher support.
Close by reviewing the key vocabulary and having students complete one final problem together. Ask students to repeat the sentence frame and celebrate their oral responses.
Send home 2-3 short picture word problems for students to solve with a family member. Students should draw the answer or say it aloud in the target language.
