Story Elements | Whole Class
Students will identify the main story elements in a read-aloud: characters, setting, and important events. Through discussion, sorting, and drawing/writing, students will practice telling who is in the story, where it happens, and what happens first, next, and last.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| character | A person or animal in a story. |
| setting | Where and when a story happens. |
| event | Something that happens in the story. |
| beginning | The first part of the story. |
| middle | The part of the story where most of the action happens. |
| end | The last part of the story. |
Show the book cover and ask students what they notice. Introduce the idea that good readers look for who is in the story, where it happens, and what happens.
Turn and talk about what they see on the cover and share ideas with the class.
Explicitly teach character, setting, and event using simple examples and the anchor chart. Point to each part while explaining.
Repeat vocabulary words, act out examples, and help add ideas to the chart.
Read the story aloud, pausing to model thinking: 'Who is this character?' 'Where are they now?' 'What happened first?' Ask short, focused questions during the reading.
Listen, answer questions, and identify story elements with partner support.
Use picture cards or sentence strips. Guide students to sort examples into character, setting, and event categories. Support the class in retelling the story in order.
Work as a whole class to place cards and say the story elements aloud.
Give students a paper organizer or blank paper. Ask them to draw one character, one setting, and one important event from the story. Circulate and confer.
Draw and label story elements with invented spelling or simple words, then share with a partner.
Review the anchor chart and ask students to name one character, one setting, and one event from the story. End with a quick oral retell.
Respond orally and help complete the class retell.
Revisit the anchor chart and have students complete a quick oral retell using the sentence pattern: 'The character was ___. The setting was ___. One important event was ___.'.
Formative assessment will be based on student participation during the read-aloud, accuracy in sorting story element cards, and completion of the draw-and-tell organizer. The teacher will note whether each student can identify at least one character, one setting, and one important event from the story.
