Listen, point to clues, and tell the teacher what they notice.
Model 2 more examples using short sentences. Point out how nearby words and pictures can help. Write the clue and the guessed meaning on the board.
Repeat the steps with the teacher and answer quick oral questions.

Listen, ask questions, and get materials ready.
Circulate, support students quietly, and check for correct use of clues. Confer with students who need help and prompt them to reread the sentence.
Work independently on the practice sheet, using context clues to figure out each word.
Invite a few students to share one answer and explain which clue helped them. Confirm correct thinking and clarify mistakes.
Share answers and explain their thinking.
Give one final sentence with a new word and ask students to write the clue and the meaning on a sticky note or half-sheet.

Students will complete an independent practice sheet and an exit check to show they can use context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.
Send home 3 simple sentences with one unknown word in each. Students will circle the clue, guess the meaning, and draw a small picture or write one word to show their thinking.
