Number Sense | Guided Practice
Students will use art materials to represent numbers in creative ways while practicing counting, number recognition, and one-to-one correspondence. The lesson is teacher-guided with hands-on practice and short sharing moments.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| number | A symbol that tells how many. |
| count | To say numbers in order while touching each item. |
| match | To show the same amount. |
| set | A group of objects. |
| more | A larger amount. |

Show number cards 1–10. Ask students to name the number and clap that many times together.
Say numbers aloud, clap the matching number of times, and point to the correct card.
Demonstrate making a simple picture with a chosen number, such as 5 suns or 3 flowers. Count each item aloud while placing or drawing it.
Watch, count with the teacher, and repeat the counting steps.
Give each student a number card and help them make an artwork showing that number using crayons, stickers, shapes, or counters. Circulate and prompt counting aloud.
Create an artwork that matches the number card and count each item as they add it.
Invite a few students to show their work and explain how their picture matches their number.
Share their artwork and say the number and the amount shown.
Review the words count, match, and set. Ask students to point to an artwork and tell how many objects they see.
Repeat key vocabulary and answer quick oral questions.
Gather students and have them hold up one finger if their artwork showed 1, two fingers if it showed 2, and so on. End by saying, 'Numbers help us count and make art!'
