Story Elements | Whole Class
Students will review key story elements while practicing spelling, word recognition, and correct usage of high-frequency academic vocabulary related to literature. The lesson uses whole-class guided instruction, interactive writing, oral practice, and short collaborative activities to strengthen spelling in a low-pressure way.

|---|---|
| character | A person, animal, or figure in a story. |

Display the lesson vocabulary. Read each word aloud, model pronunciation, and briefly discuss meaning. Highlight any tricky letter patterns.
Repeat the words, listen for sound-to-letter patterns, and write each word once in notebooks.
Break each vocabulary word into syllables and letters. Model strategies such as underlining tricky parts, clapping syllables, and covering-copying-checking.
Chorally spell each word, then write it from memory and self-check against the model.
Say a definition or example and ask students to identify the matching term. Prompt students to spell the answer aloud before writing it.
Respond as a whole class, spell the term aloud, and record the correct spelling.
Write short sentences on the board using story-elements terms. Invite students to come up and complete missing words or correct misspellings.
Suggest spellings, notice errors, and rewrite correct versions in notebooks.
Lead a brief turn-and-talk followed by whole-class share. Ask students to explain which words are hardest to spell and why.
Discuss spelling challenges, share strategies, and practice spelling selected words together.
Dictate six to eight vocabulary words or short sentences containing the words. Circulate and support as needed.
Write the dictated words neatly, then compare answers with the board and correct mistakes.
Review the vocabulary one final time. Ask students to name one spelling strategy they used today and one story-elements word they can now spell confidently. End by reading the words together as a class.
