Context Clues | Small Group
In this small-group lesson, students learn how to use context clues from surrounding words and sentences to figure out the spelling of unfamiliar words. Students practice identifying clues, testing possible spellings, and confirming accuracy through reading aloud and peer discussion.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| context clues | Words, phrases, or sentence details around an unfamiliar word that help reveal its meaning or spelling. |
| surrounding context | The nearby words and sentences that give hints about an unknown word. |
| prediction | A possible answer made before confirmation based on clues. |
| spell-check | A tool or process used to verify the correct spelling of a word. |
Write one sentence on the board with a misspelled but recognizable word. Ask students what clues in the sentence help them identify the correct word and spelling.
Look at the sentence, name clues, and suggest the correct spelling.
Model how to use context clues: read the full sentence, identify meaning clues, think about word patterns, and test a spelling choice. Think aloud with one example.
Listen, annotate the clue words, and follow the teacher's thinking process.
Distribute the handout. Read each sentence aloud and ask students to highlight clue words, then write the spelling they think is correct. Provide immediate feedback and confirmation.
Mark clue words, write possible spellings, and explain why each choice fits the context.
Have students compare answers with a partner or verify one word using a dictionary or spell-check tool.
Discuss one or two answers, revise if needed, and confirm the correct spelling.
Ask students to share one strategy they used to find a spelling from context clues. Summarize the steps on the board.
State one takeaway and one clue they found helpful.
Review the strategy: read the full sentence, find clue words, make a spelling prediction, and confirm it. Reinforce that context clues support both meaning and spelling decisions.
Students complete a short 5-item exit ticket in which they identify context clues and write the correct spelling for each unfamiliar word. Score for accuracy and for a brief written explanation on at least one item.
Write three original sentences that include an unfamiliar word. Underline the context clues and provide the correct spelling of the word in each sentence. Optionally, bring one sentence to class for a peer to solve.
