Display a simple map and ask students what information they can gather from it. Briefly review prior knowledge.
Share quick observations and name any map features they recognize.
Model how to identify the title, legend, scale, compass rose, and labels on the map. Think aloud while pointing out each feature.
Follow along, answer guiding questions, and annotate the map if provided.
Distribute the question sheet and monitor groups as they answer 4-6 map-reading questions. Offer prompts as needed.
Work together to locate information, use vocabulary, and record group answers.
Invite groups to share one answer and explain how they found it. Clarify any misunderstandings.
Report answers and explain their reasoning using map vocabulary.
Give a short exit ticket or quick quiz with 2-3 questions on map parts and interpretation.
Complete the assessment independently.
Review the key takeaway: maps communicate location, direction, and distance using specific features.
State one thing they learned or one map feature they can identify now.
Maps help us understand place, direction, distance, and relationships between locations. Students should leave able to identify key map parts and use them to answer basic questions.
Use the exit ticket or short quiz to assess whether students can identify map features and interpret simple map information independently.
Find a map in a newspaper, textbook, app, or online source. Label at least three map features and write 3-4 sentences explaining what the map shows and how you know.
