Ask learners to name items they see in the classroom and write a few examples on the board. Guide the class to notice that these things are all physical objects.
Share examples of things they can see and touch in the room.
Explain that matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Give simple examples and non-examples. Introduce solid, liquid, and gas using the classroom objects.
Listen, repeat key vocabulary, and answer simple questions.
Show the objects one at a time. Ask the class to decide whether each is a solid, liquid, or gas and place it under the correct label. Prompt learners to explain their thinking.
Classify each object aloud and discuss why it belongs in each group.
Ask learners to turn to a partner and describe one object using at least one vocabulary word, such as solid, liquid, or gas. Circulate and support as needed.
Talk with a partner and practice using the new vocabulary.
Review the definition of matter and ask a few quick oral questions. Summarize the lesson in one simple sentence.
Respond to review questions and state one thing they learned.
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Today we learned that matter can be a solid, liquid, or gas and that we can recognize it in everyday life.
