Ecosystems | Mini Lesson
In this 20-minute mini lesson, adult learners explore how robotics can model ecosystem interactions. Students identify key parts of an ecosystem, then use a simple robot or simulation to represent how energy or information moves through a food web. The focus is on understanding systems, relationships, and cause-and-effect in a hands-on, practical way.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| ecosystem | A community of living things and their environment working together as a system. |
| producer | An organism, such as a plant, that makes its own food. |
| consumer | An organism that gets energy by eating other organisms. |
| decomposer | An organism that breaks down dead material and returns nutrients to the environment. |
| food web | A set of connected food chains that shows how energy moves through an ecosystem. |
| system | A group of parts that work together to do a job. |
Ask: 'What living and nonliving parts are needed for an ecosystem to work?' Record a few responses and connect them to a system.
Share prior knowledge and name examples such as plants, animals, water, soil, and sunlight.
Briefly define producer, consumer, decomposer, and food web. Show a simple example on the board and explain that robotics can model movement or connections in a system.
Listen, take brief notes, and answer quick questions about each role.
Set up a simple path, grid, or simulation. Assign role cards (sun, plant, rabbit, fox, decomposer). Program or guide the robot to move from one role to the next to show energy flow or interaction. Ask learners to predict the next step before each movement.
Work in pairs or small groups to identify the correct order, follow the robot movement, and discuss what each stop represents in the ecosystem.
Remove or change one role in the model, such as fewer plants or no decomposers. Ask how that affects the rest of the system and the robot path.
Explain cause-and-effect relationships and share one example of a change in an ecosystem.
Invite each learner to complete the sentence: 'In an ecosystem, when ____, then ____ because ____.' Reinforce the connection between robotics and system thinking.
Share a brief summary aloud or write it on a sticky note.
Review the key idea that ecosystems are systems with connected parts, and robotics can help us visualize those connections. End by reinforcing that changing one part of a system affects the whole.
