Story Elements | Standard Lesson
Students will analyze story elements using a physical education context. Through short movement-based scenarios, they will identify characters, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution, then apply those elements to create and interpret a brief sports-related story sequence.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Character | The person or group involved in the story or scenario. |
| Setting | The time and place where the story happens. |
| Plot | The sequence of events in the story. |
| Conflict | The problem or challenge that creates tension in the story. |
| Resolution | How the problem is solved or ended. |
| Theme | The larger message or idea suggested by the story. |
Briefly review story elements with one simple sports example. Ask students to name the character, setting, conflict, and resolution in the example.
Respond orally and give quick examples from familiar games, teams, or workouts.
Present a short movement-based story and model how to identify each story element. Emphasize that the same framework used in reading applies to analyzing game situations and active scenarios.
Take notes and answer guided questions as the teacher models the analysis.
Distribute scenario cards. Have students work in pairs to label the story elements for each card and justify their choices with evidence from the text.
Read the scenario, identify the story elements, and discuss reasoning with a partner.
Assign small groups a simple physical task or game sequence. Ask them to create a 3- to 4-step story that includes a clear conflict and resolution, then present it briefly.
Plan and perform a short movement story, naming the story elements as they present.
Prompt students to write a concise analysis of one scenario or performance using the vocabulary terms accurately.
Write an individual response identifying the story elements and explaining how they connect.
Lead a quick whole-group review. Ask a few students to share one strong example of a character, conflict, or resolution from the lesson.
Share responses and listen for accurate use of story-element vocabulary.
Students share one story element they can identify quickly in a sports or movement scenario and one question they still have about analyzing stories in PE. Teacher reiterates that story elements help organize events, whether in literature, games, or real-life situations.
Write a one-paragraph story about a sports or fitness experience that includes character, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution. Underline each story element and label it in the margin.
