Theme | Review Lesson
A very easy, classroom-ready review lesson for adult learners on the concept of theme in music. Students will listen, identify, describe, and compare themes in familiar musical examples through guided discussion and simple practice.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Theme | A main musical idea that is repeated and remembered. |
| Motif | A short musical idea or pattern that may be part of a theme. |
| Variation | A change made to a theme while keeping some parts the same. |
| Repeat | To play or sing something again. |
| Recognizable | Easy to identify because it sounds familiar. |
Ask learners what the word theme means in everyday life. Introduce the music meaning: a main musical idea. Write the definition on the board and give a simple spoken example.
Share ideas, listen, and repeat the definition. Give examples from songs or TV they know.
Play a short excerpt. Model how to listen for the main idea by humming or tapping the repeated part. Ask simple questions: What do you hear again? Does it sound the same each time?
Listen, point to the repeated part on the guide, and answer guided questions.
Play 2 to 3 short excerpts again. Have learners work in pairs to say when they hear the theme and whether it repeats exactly or changes a little.
Work with a partner to identify the theme, compare answers, and share one observation with the class.
On the board, write two columns: Theme and Variation. Read or play short examples and ask learners to decide which column fits best. Keep the choices simple and supported.
Respond orally, sort examples, and explain their thinking using the vocabulary words.
Give one final excerpt. Ask learners to write or say one sentence: 'The theme is...' or 'I hear a variation when...'
Complete the listening note independently or with light support.
Review the key definition and ask volunteers to share one thing they learned. Summarize the lesson in one or two sentences and connect theme to songs they already know.
State one new fact or one example of a theme from class.
End by restating: a theme is the main musical idea that listeners can hear again and remember. Ask learners to name one theme they heard today and one word that helped them describe it.
Find one song, movie theme, or TV theme at home. Write or tell a short response: What is the theme? Where do you hear it repeated? Does it change at all?
